Congresswoman Barbara Lee Comes to Harlem
The Friends of Barbara Lee, a group of local women and members of local non-profit organizations invite members of the Harlem and NYC community, as well as local politicians, to a book signing for Congresswoman Barbara Lee where she will discuss and sign her new book, Renegade for Peace and Justice: Congresswoman Barbara Lee Speaks for Me.
Congresswoman Lee’s willingness to stand on principle earned her unsolicited international attention when she was the only member of congress to vote against a resolution giving President George Bush virtually unlimited authority to wage war against unspecified nations, unspecified organizations, and unspecified individuals for an unspecified period of time in the wake of the horrific events of 9-11. Some praised her vote opposing this blank check to use force as heroic and inspirational; others called for her death.
Lee was first elected to represent California’s 9th Congressional District in 1998. A member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Lee serves on the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, the State and Foreign Operations and the Financial Services Subcommittees. Additionally, she serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee on the subcommittees on Western Hemisphere and Africa and Global Health.
She was sworn in as the Chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) on January 6, 2009. The 42-member CBC is one of the longest standing caucuses in Congress and is often referred to as the “conscience of the Congress” for their willingness to tackle the most serious social and economic issues facing minorities in the United States.
The group, Friends of Barbara Lee, includes NYS First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson, Pamela Green Perkins, Michelle D. Stent, Robin Verges, Singleton McAllister, Patricia Hayling Price, Diane Thompson, Andrea & Evelio Grillo, Evan T. Stent and The Big Apple Cluster of The Links.
