In the midst of national economic trouble, Laidback Founder and Creative Director Tina Shoulders has found her niche in the home decor industry. Â The Bronx native and former fashion designer is making a mark with her pop culture inspired pillows, which were unique enough to be featured on MTV’s Real World Brooklyn. Laidback goes beyond making furnishings for the home, but it’s also living a lifestyle that brought Tina’s business to where it is today.
“I love good design. Â The home is a place to feel good and feel comfortable. Â My designs let me go into everybody’s house and leave a piece of me there“, says Tina when asked about what she loves most about designing.
The inspiration for Laidback has always been to make home wares that are conversational pieces and inspire someone take a second look.  Designs that have separated her from others in the home decor industry include, “The Ol Play Luxe” which feature an image of a record that is hand appliqued onto a luxurious leather to look and feel vinyl.
Despite the economic lull that most Americans running a business have felt, Tina has found a way to use it to her advantage.  ”The economy forces you to not be complacent, hustle a little harder, and gives me the opportunity to be more creative”, said Tina when talking about facing the challenges in today’s economy. She’s found that the biggest advantages of being an entrepreneur is creative freedom and being able to use her intuition to bring her creations to the market without needing to go through someone else’s approval.
Tina’s advice for upcoming entrepreneurs, “Make sure you’re part of the social media movement.  You get to know the likes/dislikes of your customers and you become more accessible to them.  It’s a good way to know your customers and have transparency.”
Upcoming projects for Laidback include a new duvet and pillow collection in the spring. A new lifestyle show on the web is in the works also, which will incorporate Tina’s mantra of modern design and tranquility.
