The Online Hip-Hop Awards is an awards event that provides fans the power to vote for their favorite rap star or become a star themselves. It merges hip-hop and technology.
Fans, artists and the music industry, together, have an equal platform to elect the best in over 30 categories. People can nominate and vote for their favorite Hip-Hop artists, websites and even their friends. The voting will culminate in a live award show this November featuring presentations and performances by hip-hop’s hottest stars.
Launched in 1997 to pay tribute to “hip-hop’s independent spirit” online, the inaugural Online Hip-Hop Awards was just a simple online form promising hip-hop fans the power to “voice their choice” for their favorites in 15 categories. The Awards grew and continued to grow by incorporating new technologies into the Awards including streaming internet radio and broadband video.
In 2000, the Awards moved its celebration offline with the production of a lavish show at NYC’s Cipriani. The live show, hosted by LL Cool J, featured performances by Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes, awards presented to Eminem, Dr. Dre and Jay-Z and sponsors including Yahoo Music, Arizona Jeans and retail chain FYE. The 2000 Awards show netted 150 million online impressions, was heard by 60 million radio listeners and featured in more than 500 participating retail stores.
After a 7 year hiatus, The Online Hip-Hop Awards returns.
The Online Hip-Hop Awards are executive produced by 4CONTROL Media, the founders of SOHH.com – the web’s largest Hip-Hop community.
