A Look Back — Congressman Charles Rangel Raises Over $1M at his Annual Birthday Gala
Over 1,000 friends and family presented Congressman Charles Rangel with over $1M to Benefit The Rangel Victory Fund at his recent birthday celebration. The gala was held at Tavern on The Green.
The Victory fund is a joint fundraising committee of Rangel for Congress and several other democratic candidates. The candidates include John Boccieri (OH), Debbie Halvorson (IL), Ashwin Madia (MN), Dan Maffei (NY), Eric Massa (NY), Michael McMahon (NY), Walt Minnick (ID), Jon Powers (NY), Dan Seals (IL) and Linda Stender (NJ).
Guests paid between $200 and $5,000 to attend the event with the first $1,000 of contributions going to Rangel for Congress. Every dollar above that amount was equally divided among the campaign committees of the other candidates.
At the gala, Rangel presented Howard Dean a $100,000 check for the Democratic National Committee (DNC). However, the DNC returned the gift because as the DNC nominee, Barack Obama does not accept money from political action committees.
Rangel is one of the biggest contributors to the effort to expand the Democratic party in congress. He has been responsible for contributing over $2.5 million directly to candidates and national party committees.
