First Annual Brooklyn HIV Testing & Awareness Day

| October 2, 2008 | 1 Comment

The day-long event will be held October 4th in the back of the Antioch Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant. New Yorkers can take advantage of free HIV tests, blood pressure and glucose screenings, flu shots, and educational materials along with free music, performances and giveaways.

Brooklyn has been hit hard by the HIV epidemic. Brooklyn residents account for more than a quarter of New York City’s HIV diagnoses each year. Among Brooklyn residents who tested positive in 2006, close to a third were already sick with AIDS by the time they learned they had HIV. These individuals had likely been infected for nearly a decade but had never been diagnosed – meaning they missed opportunities for timely treatment and may have unknowingly passed the virus to others.

Knowing your status is one of the best things you can do to stop the spread of HIV. Getting tested helps you to stay safe if you’re negative – and develop a plan to feel better, live longer, and protect others if you are positive. Here is a schedule of events:

The only fool proof prevention method is abstaining. Condoms are the next best choice. Whatever your choice always be careful with yours and your partners life. Also, having testing done if you are sexually active is very important.
