Audrey Smaltz, Harlem born and raised former model, former Ebony Fashion Fair Coordinator and Founder of The Ground Crew, (a backstage management group for major fashions shows during fashion week) is outraged by the recent New Yorker cover and its attempt to satirize Barack Obama and his wife.
She calls the cover political sabotage and has organized a silent protest at the office of the New Yorker near Times Square. Her e-mail that is circulating the internet is below.

Good Afternoon,
Please be advised that I am rallying my friends, family and staff together to Silently Protest the New Yorker magazine cover, dated July 21, 2008. This cover titled, “Politic of Fearâ€, poorly depicts Senator Obama and his wife. It is illustrated by Barry Blitt.

CALLED POLITICAL SATIRE,
I FEEL THAT IS POLITICAL SABOTAGE.

We will gather at the office of the New Yorker Magazine.
Location: 4 Times Square, NYÂ 10036
(between 6th Avenue & Broadway.
Date: Monday July, 21st, 2008
Time: High Noon.Silent Protesting is not new. In 1917, the Harlem community silently protested against the East St. Louis & Waco Texas riots which killed 40 African Americans. They marched down Fifth Avenue on July 28, 1917.
In Argentina, the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo protested against kidnappings of 9000 sons and daughters.
We will walk in silence against the New Yorkers depiction and profit that this publisher will make.
In both protests, there was a fashion statement. In 1917, Harlem’s 8000 silent protesters walked in their finest clothes. The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo wore white head scarves as a symbol of peace.
I suggest that we come out in our best attire: ladies in hats and gloves, men in fine suits and ties.
I ask that each of you bring a friend.
God is Love,
Audrey
